When homeowners call Big River Roofing, they usually have the same questions. What does a new roof cost? How long will it take? Is my damage covered by insurance? What is the difference between the types of shingles? We put this page together so you can get a head start on those answers before you pick up the phone. None of it replaces a real conversation about your specific roof, but it should give you a foundation to work from.
If you want to talk through something we did not cover here, call (724) 877-7380 or request a free roof quote online.
About five years. In that time, our neighbors have voted us Best of the Best four years in a row. You can read more about us on our about page.
Our office is at 2404 E State St in Hermitage, PA. We serve Mercer County, Lawrence County, and Butler County, including Sharon, Grove City, New Castle, Slippery Rock, and Cranberry Township.
Yes. We are registered with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General as a home improvement contractor, which is required for any contractor doing more than $5,000 in work per year in this state. We also carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage. Ask for our registration number and proof of insurance any time. We are happy to provide it.
Yes. No cost, no obligation, no pressure. Our free roof quote page walks through what to expect.
It depends on the size of your roof, the material you pick, and the condition of what is underneath. A typical asphalt shingle replacement on a single-family home in our area usually runs in the range a homeowner would expect for a major home improvement project, but we do not quote prices without seeing the roof. Anyone who gives you a price over the phone without an inspection is guessing.
Scope and materials. A cheaper quote might be reusing old flashing, skipping ice and water shield, or using lower-grade shingles. Make sure every quote lists the same line items before you compare prices. The Federal Trade Commission has a good guide on what to look for when comparing contractor estimates.
Ask us about it when you call. We can walk you through the options available at the time of your quote.
Check, credit card, and most standard forms of payment. We spell out terms on the written estimate so there are no surprises.
Architectural shingles. They hold up better than 3-tab shingles in wind, they look better from the ground, and they usually come with a longer warranty. For most homes in our area, they are the right choice.
A properly installed metal roof can last 50 years or more with minimal upkeep. They cost more up front than asphalt, but the lifespan usually makes up for it.
No, not when it is installed correctly. Metal roofs go over decking and underlayment, not open rafters. The sound from inside a properly finished home is about the same as an asphalt roof.
Most single-family roof replacements take one to three days. Larger or more complex roofs take longer. We give you a timeline in writing before the work starts.
No. Most homeowners are at work while we are on the roof. We just need access to the driveway for the dumpster and an outdoor outlet for our equipment.
We take steps to prevent it. Tarps over shrubs, plywood over delicate surfaces, and a clean perimeter at the end of each day. If something gets damaged despite all that, we make it right.
We install year-round in Western Pennsylvania. Spring through fall is the busiest season, but we also do winter installs as long as the temperature and weather cooperate. If your roof is failing in January, do not wait until May.
Depends on the roof. If you have a 10-year-old roof with a single leak around a vent pipe, a roof repair is usually the right answer. If you have a 22-year-old roof with multiple issues, putting money into repairs is usually not worth it. We will tell you which situation you are in, and we will not upsell you.
Our leak detection process starts with the stain inside, works up to the attic, and ends on the roof surface. Water almost never comes in directly above where it shows up on the ceiling. It travels down rafters and across decking before it drips. Finding the actual source takes a trained eye.
Yes. A sagging roof usually means structural damage to the decking, rafters, or trusses. Call us, do not wait.
In most cases, yes. Our missing shingle replacement service handles that. The main issue is color matching on older roofs, where the existing shingles have faded. We will be honest about what you can expect.
Usually, yes, if the damage is recent and storm-related. Wind damage and hail damage are both typically covered under standard homeowner policies. Cosmetic damage and wear and tear usually are not.
The short version: you file a claim, an adjuster comes out, they approve a scope and a dollar amount, and we do the work for that amount minus your deductible. Our insurance claims assistance page walks through it in more detail.
Call a roofer first if you can. We can take a look and tell you whether there is enough damage to make a claim worth filing. Filing a claim that gets denied can still go on your record, so it is worth knowing what you are dealing with first.
It depends on your insurer and your history. For a single storm claim, most homeowners do not see a significant rate change, but rules vary by company. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department has resources that explain how homeowner coverage works in this state.
Two kinds. The manufacturer covers the materials, usually for 25 to 50 years depending on the shingle. We cover the labor with a workmanship warranty. Because we carry manufacturer certifications, we can offer stronger warranty coverage than most crews.
Common issues include unauthorized repairs by another contractor, improper ventilation, pressure washing, and walking on the roof in ways that damage the shingles. Read your warranty documents when you get them. We will walk you through the key points at the end of the job.
For most manufacturer warranties, yes, though there is usually a time window and a small transfer fee. It is a nice feature for resale. Ask us about the specifics at the time of installation.
Once a year is a good rule of thumb, plus after any major storm. A quick inspection catches small problems before they become expensive ones.
We do not recommend it. The National Safety Council lists falls as one of the most common home injuries, and walking on shingles also damages them. If there is something you want cleaned off the roof, call us.
Ice dams are almost always a ventilation and insulation problem, not a roofing problem. Proper attic ventilation keeps the roof deck cold enough that snow does not melt and refreeze at the eaves. If you are getting ice dams every winter, that is something we can look at during a quote.
Not always, but it is a good time to consider it. If your gutters are old, sagging, or undersized, doing both at once saves you money on labor and makes sure everything is integrated correctly. The same goes for siding, which often has damaged trim at the roofline that is easier to replace while we are already there.
Four things: honesty, communication, reliability, and doing what you say you are going to do. Those are not slogans, they are what Don built this company on, and they are why we have been voted Best of the Best four years running. You can also look us up on the Better Business Bureau if you want an outside opinion.
